Soul Laid Bare

 Ashes of Me

I lay my soul bare
naked as the trees of winter
branches like the fingers of my soul
ever reaching towards the sun
begging for light, warmth, life
roots exposed by the dangers of time and storms
still strong in the twisting ground
but fragile in the upheaval
passion's fire burning within me
urgent as the flames of Hell
overwhelmed by the need to shower the earth in blossoms
let them carry my soul far and wide
they never come out whole
but course hard in my veins
bruising just as surely as the storm and drought
unable to fulfill
release
lost somewhere between my heart and my fingers
discombobulated words set adrift on the wind
float around my feet
like ashes of me
