Sidekick Sod Buster

she rode by my side all day long in wavy
clouds of dust and the sweltering heat of
the early summer sun. The ground needed
turning and I had to get her done. We rode
a 1966 Case tractor.

she was still in high school and about to
graduate as I  challenged the thoughts of
attending college. Plowing helped me to concen-
trate so I thought a day on the farm and my
persuasive charm might attract her.

we plowed the fields that day like there was
no tomorrow and nothing stood in our way,
no pitfalls, sinkholes or undulating furrows.
Smooth sailing is what it was. It was a plow
boy's dream and the very beginnings of love.
