Heron on a Stump

There is nothing more humbling
than to see a bird whose brain is
the size of a pea standing grace-
fully and steadfastly on one foot,
on a stump, in a lake, surrounded
by a dozen floating lily pads, while
the other rests snugly beneath a
wing...piercing eyes and an enduring
gaze focused on and waiting for that
one underworld shadow attached to
the fin-tailed creature which is about
to become his early morning meal.

If only I could fish like that.
