Katrina

I still remember seeing
our neighbor setting on
his porch beer in hand
laughing and waving as
we drove safely away.

We set on the highway
for hours to escape
the storm that was
deemed a monster.

Scared to death that we
wouldn't make it far enough
or be blown away.

It took weeks to get back
to the worst horror I had
ever laid my eyes on.

I just wanted to go home. We
started our trek across town,
it took most of the day.

We climbed over piles of debris
that looked like mountains. Only
to find that what laid on the
other side was nothing more than
a waste land.

There was no longer that welcoming
refuge we called home.  As I stood
there and gazed I could only
remember that one last look and wave
to Jeff as we drove away.

Hundreds of miles and almost two
years later I still wonder if he
stayed or or if he meet he fate
that day.
