When Grandma Burned My Nest Egg

Comic books, priceless baseball cards,
original Playboy Magazines of Marilyn
Monroe,

Because my grandma got angry with
me back then is the reason why today
I have no place to go.

I now realize I should have taken out the
garbage that particular day,

I should have removed my muddy shoes
before tramping on the new carpet that
way,

I'm stuck at a four-way stop and I feel
myself steadily growing old,

This all happened one day after a
drenching rain about fifty years ago,

Blue ribbons for my horse, ...basketball and
track trophies for me, of course, ... all of the
concrete memories of my private world were thrown
into the fire that day.

Grandma threw the meanest fit and destroyed
my trophy room and emptied it that day. It was her
way of protesting when things didn't quite go her
way.

I still have my memories, though ... to carry with
me for a few years more. Some are written down
and tucked away in my miscellaneous drawer.
