Brooklyn Rhapsody

Brooklyn

Her and I

Love jones behind the scenes

Secret lovers

Frequent fuckers

Subsequent fighters

When I leave her reach she

Mumbles under her breath

"2 CDs For 5"

"I got that new Spiderman DVD"

"Loosies Loosies"

Insecure feelings felt when I hit the Thruway that day

Left her briefly to put my lips on my uptown slide I call Fredonia

But I told her

Brooklyn no matter who I deal with

You my main squeeze

With your Nostrand Ave curves

Your Fulton Street waistline

Those measurements always do something to me

E 96th

E97th

E 98th

Damn…

Sometimes we get physical

And I gotta go downtown and eat her

Whet my appetite with Crown Fried Chicken

3 wing special

Wonder if I can afford a soda

Nah, gotta walk down the street to the bodega

The corner store

Hear the meringue but don't react

Nah, that's what Empire was for

That was my shit

When they'd open the floor

There were no walls to hold up

Protocol was dubbing all you could dub

I go to Brooklyn's back

Pull out a Tropical Fantasy

The red flavor

Proceed to put in my two cent's worth

Damn, no one's working the counter

Wonder if I could pay the deli guy…

Brooklyn took me to court

Every Saturday

That's where that crossover came from

How could somebody your size be that quick, they wonder

Everybody Brooklyn births is a dribblehead

But it's better than being a basehead

They're trying to fuck my girl now

Trying to Thomas Jefferson my girl

Milk in her coffee

But fuck Starbucks

Give me a hot cup of that ol' funky Sal's shit

Hot

Strong

Black

Narcoleptic skeptics

They way they sleep on you

First it was crack

Now it's crackers

Trying to take what's yours

Raising property value

To make her look more attractive

But Brooklyn was beautiful way before the invasion

You can't give her a low self-esteem complex

Not with that Brooklyn swagger so strong

So sincere

No one walks like Brooklyn walks

So keep your gentrification tricks

You told us to stay put and gave us the 'hood

Pulled it over our eyes

Now that we made it a fashion statement

You want a piece of the pie sitting on the guarded windowsill

I say fuck you

With every honest breath in my body

You can't have my girl

She's loyal

She's truth

She's Brooklyn

She raised me

She taught me

She's Brooklyn

She birthed me

She carried me

She's Brooklyn

And for everything you've taken

You've given double

So I owe you triple…
